Gawler River Flood Management Impact Assessment
About 40 kilometres to the north of Adelaide, the Gawler River is an important river system in South Australia. Its catchment and floodplain support significant agriculture and diverse fauna and flora. Following significant and recurrent?flood events, the Department for Environment and Water (DEW) asked us to assist in the evaluation of possible flood mitigation options that could reduce the future impact of flood events on local communities. Among the various flood mitigation options identified, we analysed raising the existing North Para River Flood Mitigation Dam (Bruce Eastick Dam) and constructing a northern floodway.
Our development economics and ecology teams collaborated on an economic assessment of potential environmental outcomes associated with identified flood mitigation options. The ecology team set up 10 scenarios simulating a range of different environmental impacts, based on the probability of rainfall events and climate change. Drawing on these simulations, our development economics team ran economic impact assessments of the costs and benefits on identified ecosystems.
DEW are using?the results of this assessment to help determine which flood mitigation options should be recommended in the final business case.
