Water Supply Security for Chinchilla and Bell

With a focus on agriculture and livestock, Chinchilla and Bell contribute fresh produce to retailers across Australia. The Western Downs Regional Council wanted to prepare a water security plan for these two regional towns in southwest Queensland and reached out to us to develop their Sustainability and Options Study.

This study involved water balance models to determine water demand for the towns as well as the current and predicted future reliability once the impact of climate change and population increase has been considered. We looked at historical data such as town water use, irrigation demands, population over time, water levels in the water storages, and rainfall. We also collected evaporation data for the towns. Additionally, we held community engagement in each town where we asked the communities about their perceptions of the existing water supply and reliability.

Using the final report, the Council evaluated options to improve water supply reliability and ranked them according to environmental and social impacts, economic viability, technical feasibility, and the reliability of the supply. They will use their selected options to keep their communities secure in their water supplies for years to come.
