Partnering with the Ottawa Senators Community Foundation and the Education Foundation of Ottawa to support STEM students looking to make an impact
Last year, we introduced you to the inaugural recipients of the Stantec/Sens Community Foundation STEM Award¡ªthree incredible students who demonstrated passion, purpose, and the drive to create change through science, technology, engineering, and math.
This year, we¡¯re proud to continue our partnership with the Ottawa Senators Community Foundation and the Education Foundation of Ottawa to support a new group of remarkable students as they take the next steps in their academic journeys. Each recipient receives a $2,000 scholarship to support their post-secondary studies in STEM-related fields.
Our 2025 winners exemplify curiosity, compassion, and a bold vision for the future. Their stories show us how powerful it can be when you invest in potential¡ªand how STEM can be deeply rooted in personal experience and a desire to help others.
From a young age, Parissa was captivated by the complexity of the human brain and the science behind mental health. Her interest grew from her own experiences and a deep commitment to understanding how social, biological, and psychological systems interact to shape our well-being. In high school, a research-driven class on social justice opened her eyes to the gaps in current mental health models, especially for vulnerable youth.
¡°I want to contribute to a mental health system that¡¯s both accessible and scientifically sound,¡± Parissa said. ¡°People with mental illness deserve increased accessibility to existing therapies and more options that are truly effective. I¡¯m incredibly grateful for this award¡ªit¡¯s an investment in my passion and my future.¡±
Claire has carried the weight of the world on her shoulders since second grade¡ªever since she learned about melting icebergs and how small, everyday actions can have a global impact. Over the years, that awareness has turned into a deep love for marine ecosystems and a fierce commitment to protecting them.
¡°The ocean feels like another world, and yet everything we do affects it,¡± Claire said. ¡°I want to help regulate these aquatic conditions and ultimately save the oceans. This award has made me hopeful for the future. For someone who has struggled with mental illness, that hope means everything.¡±
For Sayan, technology has always offered a sense of control, creativity, and comfort. His earliest inspirations came from his father¡¯s enthusiastic explanations of how computer systems worked. As he grew older, the ability to build and understand technology became more than a hobby¡ªit became a calling.
¡°Receiving this scholarship has boosted my confidence and reinforced my belief in perseverance,¡± he said. ¡°It¡¯s empowering to know that others believe in my journey. I¡¯m committed to using this opportunity to contribute to advancements in cybersecurity and systems efficiency.¡±
