Aggradation, degradation in gravel-bed rivers mediated by sediment storage and morphologic

November 09, 2021

David Luzi is lead author in article about sediment storage and transport in gravel-bed rivers in the journal Geomorphology

A proper understanding of sediment movement in gravel-bed rivers is important for a wide variety of purposes, including fluvial geomorphology, channel assessments, river engineering, sediment budgeting, and landscape evolution models. In this journal article, senior geomorphologist David Luzi and co-authors looked at the link between sediment storage, sediment transport and channel morphology. Their findings demonstrated the complexity associated with developing a unique relation between sediment transport and storage in gravel-bed rivers and highlights the importance of considering the morphologic evolution and historical bed conditions. The study has implications for those doing fisheries habitat assessments, river rehabilitation projects, and other ecosystem restoration projects involving gravel-bed rivers.
