Dam Safety & Rehabilitation
Project safety and security
Stantec has the in-house talent and skills necessary to handle all aspects of dam safety reviews and rehabilitations. As owner¡¯s engineer, we¡¯ve partnered with numerous clients to provide operations and maintenance support, dam safety training, inspections, and project monitoring.
We¡¯re leaders in emergency preparedness and assistance with emergency response plans for either low flow/drought or flood situations. For decades, we¡¯ve provided consultant services to organizations looking to develop or implement dam safety programs for existing or future dam inventories.
We¡¯ve also designed rehabilitation solutions at numerous dams worldwide, including upgrades and life extension at various existing facilities. Whether we¡¯re evaluating structures for earthquakes, floods, or forced outages, we work with you to determine remediation measures that best meet the needs of your structure and satisfy current safety requirements and guidelines.
Proven leader in dam safety
Around the world, we¡¯ve set up dam safety programs, developed safety committees, and helped owners save millions. We know the ins and outs of various international dam safety guidelines, including: US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Division of Dam Safety and Inspections, US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD), United States Society on Dams (USSD), Canadian Dam Association (CDA), Australian National Committee on Large Dams (ANCOLD), and New Zealand Society on Large Dams (NZSOLD).Comprehensive safety solutions
Our consultants offer a variety of dam safety services such as inspections and condition evaluations, detailed rehabilitation design, emergency action plans, and public safety and recreation plans. Â鶹´«Ã½ is a global leader in the application of Risk-Informed Decision-Making (RIDM), helping clients manage risks over the complete life cycle of a dam. We help our clients evaluate the adequacy of their current risk mitigation measures, determine if existing risks are tolerable, and address the overall dam safety issues present.Safeguarding our communities from future flooding events
With estimated damages exceeding $5 billion, 32 states of local emergency declared, and communities ordered to evacuate, the 2013 Southern Alberta flood was one of the costliest and most devastating natural disasters in Canadian history. Drawing on our safety Â鶹´«Ã½, Â鶹´«Ã½¡¯s solution diverts river water to an off-stream storage reservoir during extreme flood conditions. Later, after the flood peak, this excess water is released back into the river, a solution that will protect the surrounding communities for decades to come. It started with the inspection of the century-old Kentucky River Lock and Dam No. 9. We assessed the structure and looked at the above-water conditions, conducted dive inspections, and took samples. Our dam safety experts evaluated multiple dam raising alternatives, conducted a flood study of the river, and provided a structural analysis of the lock and dam components. Our recommendation? A new upstream dam. Read MoreOur People
