Leading global design firm Â鶹´«Ã½ has been recognized by Newsweek as one of the Top 100 Smart City Partners in the publication¡¯s inaugural , along with others helping to usher in a new era of city building. In describing the firm¡¯s place within the group, Newsweek notes that Â鶹´«Ã½ ¡°helps build state-of-the-art utilities, public spaces, and buildings.¡± The honor is the culmination of a growth year for smart city activities at Â鶹´«Ã½, which included the release of one of the most high-profile smart city proposals in the world.

A Community-First Design for Quayside in Toronto
In June, Sidewalk Labs publicly released its Master Innovation Development Plan (MIDP) for the Quayside District, a proposed 12-acre community in Toronto¡¯s Port Lands. The plan rethinks how infrastructure can be designed in a people-first community, and Â鶹´«Ã½¡¯s innovative approach to infrastructure features heavily in the MIDP. Anchored by a strong Toronto team, Â鶹´«Ã½ engaged top planners, engineers, designers, transportation, freight, power grid, and water infrastructure experts from across North America to develop its design for the plan, which was submitted to Waterfront Toronto, the government agency overseeing the development, and is now under review.

The Â鶹´«Ã½ Idea Hackathon
On June 25 and 26, more than 50 participants across the public and private sectors and academia participated in the??at The Globe and Mail Centre in Toronto. Participants formed teams dedicated to tackling a challenge statement:?How can we use technology to ensure Toronto is a thriving, livable, and resilient city for all??Competing teams balanced imagination with practicality to contribute to challenging discussions on the future of city building, which culminated in the?publication of a digital Idea Book.

A Global Survey of 100 Cities
In November, ESI ThoughtLab announced the key findings from its?Building a Hyperconnected City?research, a year-long global study co-sponsored by Â鶹´«Ã½ and other industry partners. The survey included 100 metro centers using technology to improve, connect, and secure areas of their urban ecosystem. The study reveals smart city best practices and shows how cities can become ¡°hyperconnected¡± hubs generating economic, social, and environmental benefits by linking key elements of their urban landscape¡ªincluding transportation, public health, energy, water, security, and sustainability.
