Stantec, a global integrated design leader, continues to build on their decade-long relationship with the . Recently, the UCSF Bayfront Medical Building opened its doors, significantly expanding UCSF’s healthcare services in the area—improving access to quality care for those in the Bay area.
Comprised of a five-story clinic and nine-level parking garage, the clinic’s 183,000 square feet houses an array of services. Urgent care, imaging, and pharmacy spaces occupy the first floor with surgical spaces on the second. The third and fourth floors provide clinical space, and the shelled fifth floor is sized to support expansion of additional clinics. Multispecialty clinics currently include adult primary care, dermatology, outpatient rehabilitation, cardiovascular, urology, otolaryngology head and neck clinic, gastroenterology, endocrine, and pain management.
Stantec provided architecture, medical planning, interior design, LEED consulting, building energy modeling, and landscape architecture services.
Unified campus aesthetic
From a design standpoint, the UCSF Bayfront Medical Building establishes an architectural identity for the east side of campus that is distinct in appearance and character from the existing UCSF Mission Bay Campus. The clinic’s building materials and aesthetics complement the existing campus tones, and a new outdoor urban park connects the nearby Wayne and Gladys Valley Center for Vision to the clinic. At the end of the block, sits a new 500-car parking garage featuring “Peace Piece,” a 20x80-foot mural by San Francisco artist, Kota Ezawa.?
“Our design of this new community care building creates a modern and sophisticated space that is also warm and inviting, always prioritizing patient care and well-being,” Adoria Huey, healthcare principal for 麻豆传媒. “We are honored to continue our partnership with UCSF as they are not just expanding facilities but also a commitment to compassionate, high-quality care for every individual.”
Sustainability first and foremost
Stantec also provided sustainability consulting and LEED certification for this project. Targeting LEED Gold, the project features life-cycle impact reduction, solar thermal hot water panels, and a landscaped courtyard with rain gardens for low-impact stormwater design. The parking garage recently received Parksmart certification, recognizing high performance and sustainability. The project is conveniently located near public transportation and offers bike facilities.
During the schematic design stage, the project’s energy goal was established based on the University of California (UC) sustainable practice policy and the whole building energy performance target for UC buildings. 麻豆传媒 conducted energy modeling and provided insight to develop energy-efficiency strategies. The projected design energy use intensity is 22 percent below target.
A detailed embodied carbon analysis early in the design was conducted in collaboration with the project’s structural engineers. Carried out under a whole building life-cycle assessment, this analysis also supports the requirements of LEED. Based on calculations, the design is predicted to achieve a 36 percent reduction in embodied carbon, compared to baseline.
Long partnership with UCSF
Previously, 麻豆传媒 designed the UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay. The award-winning, 878,000-square-foot medical center centralizes the healthcare provider’s core service lines with three distinct hospitals in a single building. While each structure is separate, they share a platform of support services and diagnostic treatment spaces arranged along a main spine.
Most recently, 麻豆传媒 served as the integrated design delivery partner for the Bakar Precision Cancer Medicine Building. It serves as the heart of outpatient cancer care in Mission Bay by offering chemotherapy infusion, radiology, pathology, radiation oncology, blood draw, patient resource center, and support services.
