Ipswich Motorway ¨C Rocklea to Darra
Upgrading an important transportation corridor must be done right the first time. So, we developed a unique, intensely collaborative relationship with our clients, and used innovative design systems, such as business information modeling (BIM), to deliver roadway improvements to users of the Ipswich Motorway from Rocklea to Darra. The Ipswich Motorway Upgrade, Rocklea to Darra (R2D), Stage 1 project is a AUD$400 million upgrade of 3 kilometres (1.8 miles) of motorway to improve safety, enhance cyclist and pedestrian facilities, and reduce traffic congestion in western Brisbane.
Due to the complexity of the project, we helped create a design and construct collaborative project agreement, as part of an integrated design joint venture (DJV) and construction joint venture (CJV) with contractors and the client, the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads.
Every decision had a far-reaching impact, so a collaborative approach was critical. From the tender process through to detailed design, the DJV and the CJV shared a project office where daily contact with the client and the CJV helped ensure successful design outcomes. The BIM process allowed engineers to view the virtual 3D project model in a user-friendly way to review and certify the design. This in turn allowed contractors to build from the model provided and work directly with engineers to resolve construction issues in the office instead of on the site.
