Albert Head Cadet Training Centre - Energy Audits
Department of National Defence (DND) has sustainability initiatives aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption associated with its infrastructure holdings. This includes the Albert Head Cadet Training Facility, on the Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Esquimalt. DND through Defence Construction Canada (DCC) has engaged us to help perform American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Level II energy audits for 17 buildings with varying typologies on the site.
We led a multi-disciplinary team made up of building performance specialists, and electrical and mechanical engineers. The team analyzed energy use in current building operations by reviewing utility billing data and site documentation as well as conducting extensive on-site walk-throughs of each building. We identified pathways with the potential for an estimated 51 percent reduction in energy usage and 81 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Energy conservation measures under consideration include upgrades to mechanical systems, building envelope, automation and controls, fuel switching, and renewable energy systems¡ªin addition to water conservation systems, domestic hot water upgrades, heat recovery, and commercial cooking and process upgrades.
The DND/DCC has strategically selected measures to progress to the detailed design phase.
