Bonnybrook Wastewater Plant Expansion Archaeological Investigation
When the City of Calgary needed to study a unique and diverse archeological site, we knew we wanted to contribute. Â鶹´«Ã½ conducted studies for the Bonnybrook Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion D Project, and led the archaeological excavation at the historic St. Dunstan¡¯s Calgary Indian Industrial School, operative 1898 to 1907.? Following its closure, the Department of Defense (DND) used the site for ordnance storage and military training camps. The main school building burned down in 1916 but records indicate that the site was used into the 1920s by the military.
Archaeological excavations at the main building identified large portions of the school foundation and basement, rooms, and an exterior staircase. Rubble, debris, and archaeological artifacts were present, most materials identifiable from DND occupation. We conducted archival research to further contribute to the site interpretation.
Through the unique assemblage of cultural materials, we provided a permanent, curated record of the material culture left behind by these diverse activities. The artifacts from the site can be used in future research, public interpretation programs, and museum exhibits.
