Charlottetown Convention Center

Conferences and events are a significant contributor to PEI¡¯s tourism and local economy. Limited by a 400 person capacity, the Charlottetown Area Development Corporation (CADC) made plans for a new 36,000 square foot Convention Center to attract larger groups. Â鶹´«Ã½ contributed geotechnical engineering, environmental services, and materials testing to this waterfront attraction.

From the initial geotechnical site investigations and environmental assessments, to assisting in the design of building foundations and the seawall, to monitoring construction activities, Â鶹´«Ã½ played an active role throughout this challenging, high-profile project.

Key project challenges included the presence of very soft, Jell-O like, marine soil below the entire site and the environmental requirement that made it impossible to remove any contaminated soil from the site.? On any given day, a Â鶹´«Ã½ scientist, engineer, or technician could be seen at the construction site assessing air and water quality, checking noise levels, monitoring pile driving, and testing concrete.

The new Convention Center is able to accept a growing number of visitors and can hold receptions for up to 3,000 people and dining events for 1,500 people.
