City of Calgary Compost Facility
The City of Calgary vows to divert 80 percent of landfill waste by 2020. Definitely a tall order, but this composting facility is a step in the right direction. It¡¯s the first commercial building in Alberta registered under LEED? v4, with several sustainable design features that complement its function.
For example, the composting process uses a lot of water. Instead of using city water, 100 percent of the site stormwater is recovered and used, which also relieves strain on the sewer system in heavy rainfall.
In terms of getting the project done, collaboration was critical to success. LEED v4 criteria demands an integrative process, and the design-build-operate delivery model means all team members¡ªthe design team, developers, operators, and the city¡ªwork together from the outset. No strangers to integration, our architects, designers, engineers, sustainability and project management experts hit the ground running.
Public education is also part of the program, with a classroom looking into the composting facility and an outdoor learning garden. Here, Calgarians can learn about the positive impact they are responsible for, just by putting their organic waste into a different bin at home.
