Northwest Trunk Sanitary Sewer Infrastructure Program
When the City of Kawartha Lakes needed to upgrade their sewage system to support new development, they decided to use Federal infrastructure stimulus funding, which came with strict timelines. This meant the City had to take on their largest capital program in four decades with an accelerated schedule. As a trusted partner, Â鶹´«Ã½ completed the Class EA, detailed design, and contract administration for 4.5 km of gravity sewer, 6 km of forcemain, and a 270 L/s pumping station.
To help meet the schedule, we separated the program into six contracts and developed a contractor prequalification process. Land access delays put the project at risk of not being sufficiently completed in time to obtain the $3.7 million of funding. We worked closely with the City's project manager and Parks, Purchasing, and Finance Departments; the benefiting developers' steering committee and Development Manager; and many of the affected landowners to expedite tendering and installation to meet funding thresholds.
The first contract, 1.5 km of twin forcemains, included a crossing of the Scugog River via microtunneling. Two 500 mm diameter pipes were installed using a 1,800 mm casing over a length of 220 meters and up to 25 meters deep. Contracts 2 through 4 included a jack and bore crossing of Kent Street, 1.5 km of 675 mm diameter gravity sewer to the new pump station (Contract 5), 1.5 km of 450 mm diameter HDPE forcemain from the pump station installed using a combination of open cut and HDD, and 1.5 km of dual 450 mm diameter gravity sewer and HDPE forcemain.?
The final 1.5 km of gravity sewer and removal of an existing sewer and pump station were completed via Contract 6.
