Clover Bar Nutrient Recovery Facility

In the City of Edmonton, sewage flows to the Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment plant. When EPCOR, the utility company, was looking for an opportunity to improve the treatment process, they considered additional uses for the wastewater. That¡¯s where the Clover Bar nutrient recovery facility came in.?

Working alongside EPCOR and the technology vendor, Ostara, we reviewed a nutrient recovery process to make sure that it made sense in this case. After that, we completed project coordination, as well as civil, structural, architectural, mechanical, and control services for a lagoon pumphouse expansion and the nutrient recovery process building and site.

In practice, the Clover Bar nutrient recovery facility takes in the Gold Bar wastewater and¡ªusing Ostara¡¯s Pearl? process¡ªrecovers nutrients, turning them into pellets of slow-release fertilizer called Crystal Green?. The facility produces 1,000 one-ton bags of fertilizer per year that EPCOR sells to farmers.?

Besides creating a marketable product from waste, this facility also protects sensitive ecosystems. These nutrients, if discharged to receiving water bodies in excess, cause significant increases in plant and algae growth, negatively impacting fish and other aquatic life.?
