Deception Bay Port Facility
We provided materials testing and inspection services during the construction of the concrete caissons. These were built to replace the deteriorating 1970s sheet pile marine structure at Deception Bay, which services Xstrata¡¯s Raglan Mine.
Sensitive to the client¡¯s need to maintain shipping schedules, reduce on-site construction, and operate within a four-month ice-free construction window, three concrete caissons were constructed in Nova Scotia and shipped over 2000 kilometres to the site.
The caissons (17 metres wide by 30 metres long by 21.5 metres high) were slip formed in Mulgrave harbour and required over 1,700 cubic metres of 58 MPa-strength advanced mix design concrete. We provided around-the-clock quality control and testing services during placement of the concrete to ensure the structures conformed with project specifications. Facing tight project constraints, the construction of the caissons was able to meet the quality, schedule and budget objectives.
