Highway 6 (Hanlon Expressway) Improvements
The Hanlon Creek and Southgate business parks had grown to be home to more than 10,000 employees, and the existing facility with an at-grade intersection couldn¡¯t support the increase in traffic volume.
The planning, preliminary design, and environmental assessment of this project included identifying a strategy to upgrade the Hanlon Expressway to full freeway standards, with access restricted to interchanges. The recommended plan included two full interchanges, a partial interchange, grade separation of several at-grade intersections, and a service road to support local access to the adjacent community.?
Our public outreach effort, which proved to be a critical element, included four (plus one for detailed design) public information centers, two neighborhood meetings, and a three-day workshop with area residents.??
Plus, as a separate assignment, our team provided detail design services on the construction of a new, grade-separated interchange between the Hanlon Expressway and Laird Road. The project included road widening and realignment, a new underpass, reconstruction of the existing intersection, street lights, and signalization of the ramp terminals.?
Open to traffic for about five years now, the users of these infrastructure upgrades start their work day with a safer and less congested commute.?

Highway planning connects communities safely, but sometimes also disrupts them. Working with the community to find the right balance is key.

A highway is more than just a facility to move cars and trucks from A to B. Modern highway design is truly based on the principle of community.
