The joys of recycling a building: How to get your adaptive reuse project on track

Hew and Draw Hotel and Boomstick Brewery

For our client, an abandoned warehouse-style retail store in downtown Corner Brook, Newfoundland, was a blank slate for their project: a combination of a boutique 36-room hotel, microbrewery, and restaurant. Achieving their vision proved to be a complex undertaking, one which our all-local design team was thrilled to support. For this adaptive reuse project¡ªwhere an older, previously existing building is transformed or renovated for a new purpose¡ªwe worked closely with the client early on, to drill down on their vision for how to update the space.

Due to the age of the site, our team made upgrades to the foundation including tearing out the existing slab and adding on to it, which permitted the addition of a new third floor. For the exterior, cladding systems and finishes were selected to enhance the form of the building, to create sharp, modern lines. With each space having unique needs, our team included independent mechanical and electrical systems to limit issues like sound or odor transmission for guests. Room suites were designed with the most up-to-date technology including room controls for temperature and lighting systems, while also minimizing energy usage.

Now welcoming both tourists and locals alike, the Hew and Draw Hotel is a landmark stop in vibrant Corner Brook.
