International Airport Benchmarking Initiative
Airport operators across North America and internationally face similar issues when defining utility performance targets for their terminal facilities. The question is often posed, what is the industry standard?
Building utility benchmarking inventories have been defined on a national level for almost 30 years. One consistent omission is airports. Some of the reasons for this include airport size and complexity in comparison to other building types; diverse utility metering and reporting strategies adopted by airports; and ultimately, a lack of clarity on the scope of components that should be included in any benchmarking assessment.
To address the problem, Â鶹´«Ã½ launched the?International Airport Benchmarking Initiative?(IABI) in 2012 to identify potential utility savings for existing terminal buildings, and provide feedback to airport designers on the features which could improve the airports of the future.
Almost 30 terminal buildings across North America have been included in the benchmarking exercise. These airports range in size from small to large hubs and in locale, from the Southern United States to Northern Canada.
Through the course of our research we have recognized the commitment within the aviation sector to drive resource efficiencies. We will continue to work closely with airports across North America to define and implement those strategies which result in more efficient and sustainable operations.
