Mistissini Sabtuan Learning Centre

Due to lack of space, the Adult Education Services Centre in Mistissini, Quebec was using local high school facilities, which limited the types of courses it could offer. To better meet the learning needs of the Eeyou Istchee Cree community, the Cree School Board undertook the construction of a brand new post-secondary education centre.

Stantec participated in the design of the impressive building, providing Â鶹´«Ã½ in mechanical, electrical, structural, and civil engineering as well as energy efficiency. The new Mistissini Vocational Centre was designed using Level 2 BIM and required rigorous interdisciplinary coordination to ensure systems and materials were delivered on schedule. Our building engineering experts had to manage several other challenges, such as the presence of soil unsuitable for construction which required additional over excavation work. Also, the region¡¯s unreliable electrical network made it necessary to add a generator as a back-up power source.

This new vocational centre pays homage to Cree heritage, combining noble materials to create glulam and steel frames. The new facilities have become a learning hub for the development of skills used in various trades and offer support services to provide students with access to essential resources that can help them succeed.
