North Island Hospitals
The Comox Valley and the city of Campbell River are attractive places for tourists and locals alike. With a vibrant community and diverse culture, they¡¯re environments that encourage relaxation and healing.
We designed two patient-centered facilities that focus on innovation as well as quality healthcare. When considering the cultural needs of local First Nations, we included larger than average birthing¡ªbuilt for families who typically invite many relatives to celebrate the birth of a baby. There are gardens on the sites for visitors, staff, and patients, including traditional medicine gardens used by First Nations healers.
In Campbell River, the natural landscape inspired the design theme of ¡°life by the sea,¡± whereas the surrounding trees inspired Comox¡¯s ¡°peace in the forest¡± theme. Both hospitals have plenty of welcoming, non-clinical spaces for patients and their supporters to enjoy¡ªwith daylight, nature views, artwork, and activity options. Similar layouts make it easy for staff to move from one facility to the other.
From a digital perspective, the team used dRofus to manage the program and equipment, collecting information for both hospitals in a single database to ensure the standardization of data across the project and aid in the production of drawings and room data sheets. The use of dRofus facilitated the editing of project data by the design team, contractor, and other team members to allow for a single source of truth. Parameters were created with flexibility in mind to allow the data to be transferred into the Revit models as required, for example, to produce coloured floor plans for user group meetings and to aid in QA of project requirements.
On the technical side, our team worked to design hospitals that are highly functional and minimize energy consumption, not only to achieve LEED Gold Certification, but also because it¡¯s the right thing to do.
