Oneida Nation of the Thames
Located in southwestern Ontario, the Oneida Nation of the Thames is home to 2,159 residents and has a total membership of 6,108. The members of the Oneida Nation have a strong cultural connection to their surrounding environment¡ªensuring they can thrive in a changing environment is integral to the long-term social well being of their community.
To evaluate the risk and impact of climate change on Oneida¡¯s infrastructure, the Ontario First Nations Technical Services Corporation (OFNTSC) and Â鶹´«Ã½ assessed the community¡¯s housing assets. The focus was to identify critical infrastructure at risk, apply asset management practices, and mitigate the potentially devastating impacts of climate change before they occur. Our team led four workshops that assessed their housing assets, school and other services. They used local knowledge as the basis of the assessment, complemented by asset policies, condition reports, and other indicators. The result was a matrix that helped the team identify high risks, a severity rating scale for the assets, and mitigation actions that are tailored to the Oneida community.
This project was one of the pilot case studies of the application of OFNTSC¡¯s First Nations Infrastructure Resilience Toolkit¡ªa universal guidance tool for First Nation communities to identify and manage critical infrastructure at risk due to climate change.
