Medicine Hat Overland Flow Protection Strategy
The South Saskatchewan River flowing through Medicine Hat is iconic but can also bring danger. In response to flooding in 2013, the City of Medicine Hat embarked upon a multi-year flood resiliency plan¡ªthe Overland Flow Protection Strategy (OFPS) Project¡ªwith a vision to implement protection measures that would safeguard its communities and residents.
The primary objective of the OFPS project was to develop the strategy, designing, and implementing overland flow protection measures at eight key locations throughout the city. The City also envisioned the need for a city-wide stormwater outfall backflow prevention project that would retrofit 40 existing outfalls with backflow valves to prevent floodwaters from impacting upstream contributing areas. Since the outset of the initial study, we have worked in close partnership with the City, refined the initial vision for overland flow protection, and helped the City to understand, clarify, and develop the best solution for each area.
The project reached a successful outcome, completing the construction of the OFPS measures along more than five kilometres of the South Saskatchewan River at the Lions Park, Harlow, River Road, Industrial Avenue and Riverside project sites.?
