Seymour Capilano Filtration Plant
Two million people count on Metro Vancouver for a safe and reliable water supply. But even with a good source of raw water, improvements were still required to better serve the community.
The original plan was to build two plants for two main sources of water ¨C the Seymour and Capilano reservoirs. Instead, we proposed expanding the Seymour plant and connecting it to the Capilano Reservoir via two tunnels (seven km long each) and the 1,080 ML/d?Capilano Pump Station. This solution saved significant public money and minimized environmental impacts.
Our traditional project goals of cost effectiveness, durability, and ease of maintenance were balanced with aesthetically and environmentally integrating this greenfield facility into the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve. We accomplished this in many ways, including a LEED Gold certified Operations building, a 95 ML/day washwater recovery system, and UV disinfection located in the filter pipe gallery, eliminating the need for a separate building.
With a capacity of 1,800 ML/d, this is the largest direct filtration plant in Canada and one of the largest in North America. At the time of commissioning, it incorporated the world¡¯s largest UV system.
