Strait of Belle Isle - Geotechnical Program
The Lower Churchill Project has the potential to generate 824 megawatts of hydroelectric power to Newfoundland and Labrador and markets beyond. In support of this project, we provided geotechnical engineering services for the feasibility assessment of a subsea tunnel that would link the island of Newfoundland with mainland Labrador, and accommodate power transmission to larger populations.
Throughout the project, we provided drill supervision, permeability testing, detailed core logging, field testing, and coordination of laboratory testing. Our teams worked together at remote sites on both the Newfoundland and Labrador coasts. In total, six oriented boreholes were successfully advanced to a maximum depth of 955 m at inclinations of 75 - 30 degrees from horizontal, extending beneath the Strait of Belle Isle.
In cooperation with SNC-Lavalin, we completed all associated reporting on the geotechnical services for contribution to the final program report, submitted to Nalcor Energy.?
