The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) Decarbonization Roadmap

The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) set a goal to achieve net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2040, in alignment with Toronto's TransformTO Net Zero Strategy. They engaged our team to lead the development of two key documents: the Energy Conservation and Demand Management (ECDM) Plan and a Decarbonization Roadmap.

Required by the City of Toronto, the ECDM Plan outlines strategies to reduce energy consumption and GHG emissions over the next five years. The Decarbonization Roadmap lays the long-term foundation for achieving net-zero emissions by 2040.

We focused on using reliable GHG inventory data and aligning decarbonization strategies with SickKids' operational needs. We prioritized communication, staff engagement, and education to foster transparent collaboration.

The resulting 2024¨C2029 ECDM Plan is a complete, public-facing document. It outlines current and proposed measures for reducing GHG emissions through energy conservation, consumption reduction, and demand management. The Decarbonization Roadmap is a living document that will be updated based on project results and lessons learned. It provides strategies for energy reduction, decarbonization measures, wellness initiatives, utility cost considerations, and broader sustainability goals.

With a solid plan in place, SickKids can treat their young patients while also creating a better environment for them to thrive in.
