Montserrat Port Development
Following the mid-90s Soufriere Hills volcano eruptions, the main port at Little Bay was buried. Although a small emergency jetty was constructed in 1997, a new permanent harbour would be required to provide an essential component of the tourism industry and growth of commercial trade for the island.
To begin developing Montserrat Port, Â鶹´«Ã½ was selected from a public international competition as the most technically qualified firm to undertake the role of owner¡¯s engineer for the Design-Build project. Our scope of work included port engineering and design for the breakwater, wharf, ro-ro ramp, shore protection, dredging, and navigation. Geotechnical engineering responsibilities included foundations, and slope stabilization. We also performed environmental and social impact assessments and management plans, along with climate risk and vulnerability assessments. We executed concept development to meet available international funding from the Caribbean Development Bank and UK Caribbean Infrastructure Fund.
The Montserrat Port development provides a safe, accessible harbour that aims to improve the efficiency and resilience of the facilities. The construction phase was also estimated to create employment opportunities and boost other sectors of the region¡¯s economy.
