Quarryman's Trail Cycleway
After the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes, the Council identified 13 Major Cycle Routes (MCRs) to develop following community feedback. The people of Christchurch wanted a city they could cycle and walk around easily, so the MCRs were incorporated into the city¡¯s transport plan.
Upon completion, the Quarryman¡¯s Trail MCR will provide a connection from the central city south-west to Halswell. A section of the cycleway was moved from an arterial road to a low-volume, local road, as a neighborhood greenway shared street, creating an opportunity for an easy connection onto a two-way separated cycleway for the remainder of the route. This allowed for a higher-standard facility to be built and parking to be retained on the side of the road opposite the cycleway. Along a different part of the route, the MCR takes the form of one-way separated cycleways on each side of the road to connect to a popular commuter route.?
The result? The Quarryman¡¯s Trail cycleway will support one of the key residential growth areas in the city. No matter where people are going, it offers an attractive transportation option for residents who want to have fun and stay active.?
