Aberdeen Cross City Connections

Aberdeen¡¯s Local Development Plan set out significant new housing and business park development, predominantly on greenfield sites on the periphery of the existing Aberdeen conurbation. Given the greenfield nature of the area, there are limited sustainable transport connections serving the sites¡ªAberdeen city council recognized that something needed to be done.

Our team was commissioned by Aberdeen City Council to undertake a study to plan sustainable transport connections between these development areas which aim to provide viable, attractive, direct linkages, as an alternative to the car. The intention was to have transportation options in place prior to people occupying these new developments, to prevent car-based transport from becoming an embedded part of the community. We developed a proposed active travel network and new bus-only connections to reduce the travel time differential between the bus and the car. In order to understand the decision making of those occupying new properties and develop the options, we also undertook primary research aimed at occupiers of recently constructed houses in the Aberdeen area.

The outcomes of the study have been used to inform regional and other transport strategies, and the council plans to take forward some of the recommendations as these new sites emerge.??
