London 2012 Olympics
One of the major challenges that London faced when hosting the 2012 Olympic games was the risk of serious travel disruptions caused by more than six million spectators in and around the city. Major changes were made to the road system, including a series of priority games lanes operating from 6:00 AM to midnight, banned turns, reversal of traffic direction, changes to junction controls and kerbside waiting, and suspension of bus stops and bus lanes.
To minimise the potential disruption, we worked with Transport for London (TfL) and the Olympic Delivery Authority from the earliest stages of planning involving a review of thousands of routes. A large range of stakeholders were consulted to identify potential risks and traffic hazards in order to recommend detailed design changes to games lanes. This ensured that traffic could move safely around the transport network.
A significant achievement was to support the development and implementation of TfL¡¯s unique freight advice programme. This was designed to ease hundreds of thousands of freight journeys and deliveries across central London. Tasks included offering one-to-one guidance to leading London hospitals to ensure vital medical supplies were in place, on time.
Our support during this two-year commission meant that games family vehicles achieved journey times which were on average 30 percent quicker than normal journeys in London.?
