Affordable Housing Community

No building exists in isolation, and the National Green Building Standards for apartments¡ªwhich encompasses energy efficiency, water conservation, and lot development¡ªsupports effective use of the space surrounding a structure. For The Paddocks, a lower income housing development in Culver, Indiana, our team designed a series of green infrastructure features that manage stormwater, provide cooling shade, and add outdoor amenities to the site.

Our own Â鶹´«Ã½ Native Plant Nursery provided the native and custom seed mix to develop a pollinator prairie landscape on the south side of the property. More than 75 native trees and shrubs were installed, including American plum trees, which provide fruit for the residents, or local wildlife. Two pocket rain gardens fed by downspout water were also created. Other features include a community garden, play areas, a fire pit, and barbeque areas. We reused pavers that were destined for landfill and even installed birdhouses around the site.

This green infrastructure project focused on social equity, access, self-sufficiency, and sustainability wherever possible. With the success of The Paddocks landscaping program, the developer has asked us to provide landscape infrastructure services on two more similar developments.
