Aurora Citywide Traffic Signal Retiming
Signal timing projects cover more than just operations and logistics. When the time came for the City of Aurora to complete a city-wide traffic signal timing update¡ªretiming nearly 300 traffic signals within the city limits¡ªthey turned to us.
Aurora is the second largest city in the Denver Metro area with more than 370,000 people. That meant tackling this challenge was no easy feat. The project included four essential components: data collection, evaluation of existing signal timing parameters, optimization of signal operations, and implementation of new timing plans throughout the city.
Timing plans were created for four separate times of day, each with their own distinct travel patterns: morning peak, evening peak, weekday off-peak, and weekend peak. The existing timing parameters were standardized during this process, to ensure that all of the signals within the city work together. The entire city was programmed with one master cycle length for each time of day to remove any disconnect between corridors that were previously operating with different cycle lengths.
The new timing plans were optimized to provide the best possible journey for drivers while also ensuring pedestrians and cyclists would be able to safely cross at any intersection at any time. As the timing was implemented throughout the city one corridor at a time, we worked diligently in the field to make sure all of the new timing plans were safe, accurate, and accommodating to all residents of Aurora.
