Avian Protection and Management for Power Infrastructure

Studying how overhead electric power lines affect birds isn¡¯t something that just happens before a new project is built¡ªit¡¯s an ongoing effort. We¡¯ve been working with ComEd since 2009, implementing their avian protection and management program, to ultimately reduce avian mortality while maintaining reliable energy for the communities they serve.?

Our job is to track and record avian interactions with ComEd¡¯s power lines and coordinate with local United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Office of Law Enforcement agents regarding avian protection issues and interactions. We also provide subject matter Â鶹´«Ã½ on bird identification, behavior, and natural history, as well as technical support related to avian collision and electrocution interactions. To top it off, we help maintain and update the company¡¯s Avian Protection Plan and related process documents, and work with company engineers to propose remedial actions and provide input on equipment standards for avian protection.

Over the years, we¡¯ve become active members of ComEd¡¯s avian steering committee. The result? ComEd is kept in compliance with their Migratory Bird Special Purpose Utility Permit, and birds are kept safe.
