Binghamton University ¨C Center of Excellence
Building on the area¡¯s history as a hub for microelectronics research, the Center of Excellence provides critical space for economically significant innovations through partnerships with global industry. We designed sustainable engineering infrastructure to support Binghamton¡¯s research and sustainability missions.
The building is designed as a series of clusters containing flexible space for core research suites, open multidisciplinary labs, industrial collaborative and symposia space around a central atrium. The large-volume atrium features natural ventilation, numerous windows operating on actuators controlled by temperature within the atrium, and a water feature. The atrium uses adaptive cooling, hydronic heating and a radiant floor heat system. The water feature flows from inside to the outside using re-circulated water fed from a 200,000-gallon storage tank that collects rainwater, and serves as the water source for the plumbing fixtures and cooling towers. Flexible, modular laboratories zoned to maximize efficiency, safety, and productivity, low volume fume hoods, a dedicated outside air systems and active chilled beams are vital to major reduction in annual energy use.
