Bismarck-Mandan Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan
The Bismarck-Mandan area is one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country. That means greater demand for transportation facilities of all kinds. Plus, renewed interest in urban neighborhoods has increased public desire for walkable and bikeable communities. Working with the Bismarck-Mandan Metropolitan Planning Organization and project stakeholders, we developed the area¡¯s first region-wide bicycle and pedestrian plan.
From the start, our team engaged stakeholders to examine existing conditions and identify goals and a vision that would guide plan development. Using these goals, we researched key strategies for implementation, categorized by the 5 E¡¯s of bicycle and pedestrian planning:? engineering, education, encouragement, enforcement, and evaluation. The results?? Recommendations for new bicycle and pedestrian facilities along key corridors as well as strategies for new policies and programs.
Community input was essential to the plan¡¯s success. We engaged residents through public open houses, convenient community kiosks, wiki mapping, and an online survey on the Â鶹´«Ã½-developed project website.
With this bicycle and pedestrian plan, new opportunities to walk, run, roll, and bike are just around the corner.
