Boston Marathon Memorial

Following the tragedies of the Boston Marathon bombing, the city and affected families were met with monumental support from around the globe. Five years later, Boston opened the conversation to memorialize the events of April 15, 2013.

Through a design competition?hosted by the City, local artist Pablo Eduardo¡¯s concept design was selected by a committee of city officials and the families that lost loved ones in the tragedy. With sensitivity to victims and families, a private design process got underway to ensure that every decision was made with care. The artist worked with our landscape architects, design visualization specialists, and structural engineers to digitally animate design changes.

The final approved design incorporated four hand-formed cast glass, bronze lighting beacons, markers made of granite, and patinaed copper placards at each site. It consists of three stone markers, two at one site and one at the other, memorializing the three victims. There are four bronze and glass light columns at each site that sit in a field of decorative granite and brick paving. Additionally, the two officers who died subsequently as a result of the attack are recognized with bronze replicas of their badges set in the brick paving field.

Opened to the public in August 2019, the markers represent Boston¡¯s unity and the community¡¯s resilience and reclaims the sites of tragedy as poetic reminders of hope.
