California High-Speed Rail Construction Package 2¨C3

The California High-Speed Rail (CAHSR) system will eventually encompass more than 800 miles (1,287 kilometres) of rail, with up to 24 stations from the San Francisco Bay area to San Diego. Construction package (CP) 2¨C3 forms the backbone of the 120-mile (193-kilometre) initial operating section of the program with over half providing new HSR alignment through three counties. This includes approximately 36 new grade separations, 3 miles (5 kilometres) of HSR structures and viaducts, 20 million cubic yards (15 billion cubic metres) of mainline embankment, and 13 interface locations with Caltrans.

We¡¯re acting as an extension of the CAHSR Authority (CAHSRA) team and assisting with the technical quality review and preparation of environmental documents, permits, and plans. We¡¯re also providing technical reviews for compliance to the HSR and Class 1 railroad¡¯s design criteria and standards for 150 major track, structural, and civil design packages. This includes more than 500 utility packages for the project¡¯s $103 million design effort. Our team has developed a streamlined system to keep track of all these plans at once, so any feedback is addressed promptly.

Additionally, we're coordinating with other companies, managing land rights, protecting the environment, and aiding small-business compliance throughout this process. One such effort involved collaboration with the CAHSRA Systems Group and the train power team of a large utility provider in Northern California. Together, we moved power lines at three locations, which means we won't have to redo work in the future.

Through these efforts, CAHSRA has saved more than $5 million on CP 2¨C3 by mitigating potential scope increases from future systems contract work.
