Central Bayside System Improvement Project
The Central Bayside System Improvement Project is a critical element of the City of San Francisco¡¯s efforts to upgrade the aged and seismically vulnerable combined sewer system on the Bayside. The Channel Force Main, part of the Bayside Collection System, transports 64% of the City¡¯s entire wastewater flows. This important infrastructure has suffered several failures since the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.
A Â鶹´«Ã½-led JV was engaged to provide planning and engineering services for a $1.2B, nine-year improvement project. The project¡¯s goals are to improve overall system reliability and resiliency to seismic events, improve water quality along the shores of the Bay by reducing combined sewer discharges, and increase operational flexibility to help meet goals related to adaptation to climate change and sea level rise.
Green infrastructure upgrades are part of the early project implementation, with larger grey infrastructure components to follow. A new large-diameter conveyance and storage tunnel with a deep pump station at the downstream end will provide additional storage to reduce the frequency of sewage discharges. The system will serve as a redundant and reliable option to transport up to 100 MGD to the treatment plant.
The team is using InfoWorks ICM as the primary tool to identify feasible alternatives ¨C along with InfoSWWM, InfoSewer, MIKE Urban, and XP SWMM. The use of 2D and InfoWorks ICM provides for a greater understanding of the hydraulics of the combined sewer system. These tools combine the hydrologic and hydraulic models into one platform, allowing the City to model the interaction between in-pipe and overland flow.
The project encompasses a 32 square-mile area, including 987 miles of pipelines and 36 combined sewer discharge structures.
