Central Catholic High School Zupancic Family STEM Center
Central Catholic High School wanted to upgrade their science and technology facilities to better prepare students for post-secondary education. They were clear the design of a new STEM facility should celebrate Catholic education traditions while embracing research in the sciences and using modern interpretations of yesterday¡¯s architecture.
Engaged as the architect and building engineer for the Zupancic Family STEM Building, our team took a split approach to address both the public and private facades as separate but related entities. This new building unites the upper and lower portions of campus with an elevator and exterior ramps connecting the lower campus gym, parking, and athletic field with the upper campus quad and main buildings. The site was surrounded by setback constraints; however, using the minimum setbacks from each side, we maximized the square footage to influence the overall shape and design of the building. We also introduced ground floor technology labs and makerspaces to support project-based learning, building, testing, and demonstrating engineering and robotics areas.
The first-floor teaching lab with an operable wall allows the space to be transformed into a community space, with the school¡¯s mission proudly displayed above. Altogether, the building is a reminder of the rich history of Central Catholic¡¯s legacy.?
