City of Wausau - Riverfront Brownfield Redevelopment

When the City of Wausau wanted to lay the groundwork for a new regional recreation and entertainment waterfront destination, they started working with our multidisciplinary team of planners, landscape architects, engineers, and scientists. The goal? Implement public improvements along 2,200 feet (670 metres) of Wisconsin River shoreline.

The new riverfront design includes an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), publicly-accessible boat and fishing wharf, a kayak launch, a multi-use trail system, riverbank restoration, landscaping amenities, and lighting and site furnishings. Our work also turned toward a previously navigable stream that had been encapsulated into a large-diameter storm sewer as the city developed. To restore the stream, it was daylighted and an arched bridge was built over it with a lighted waterfall feature (for both visual and functional appeal). This restoration served to recirculate fresh water from the Wisconsin River into the stream during low flow periods in the summer.

Over the past several years, our brownfield team has helped city officials obtain more than $2.5 million in federal and state funding to remediate and redevelop 31 acres (12.5 hectares) of vacant and contaminated riverfront parcels. Sources of funding included an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) area-wide planning grant, two EPA clean-up grants, and numerous public and private grants and contributions. Today, the process of reclaiming this valuable waterfront resource for the enjoyment of the community continues to unfold.
