Light-Fuel Distribution Terminal
One of North America's largest light-fuel distribution terminals consists of two municipal drinking water wells that serve a majority of the drinking water needs for a major southern California community. Located immediately down gradient of the terminal, these wells were initially impaired by contaminants from an unknown source. Although an investigation determined the distribution terminal had not impacted the wells, the discovery of substantial hydrocarbons beneath the terminal was recognized as a threat to the strategic aquifers. Working in tandem with representatives from the affected city, we successfully contained the plume and initiated contaminant recovery ¡ª avoiding major impacts to the reputation and finances of both our client and the city. This was accomplished through cutting-edge and creative remedial technologies. We are recognized by the city and our client as directly affecting the protection of a major regional groundwater source.
Our comprehensive approach has resulted in waste minimization, cost avoidance, and environmental compliance. To date, we have recovered more than 2 million gallons of petroleum hydrocarbons from underlying groundwater aquifers, while reducing remediation costs. Estimates suggest the total savings should approach $128 million over a 30-year life cycle.
