Eighth Street Viaduct Reconstruction

Stantec was responsible for design plans and environmental studies for the Eighth Street viaduct reconstruction project. Eighth Street is a major east-west collector that connects downtown Cincinnati with the west side of the city. Where Eighth Street crosses the project site, it consists of four traffic lanes, two bike lanes and two sidewalks. The Burns Street ramp provides access from Eighth and Burns Streets to Evans Street below the viaduct.

The project involved three structures: the Eighth Street viaduct, the Eighth Street bridge, and the Burns Street ramp. All three structures were constructed in 1929; the viaduct was last rehabilitated in 1974. 80 years of salt laden water draining through the viaduct¡¯s intermediate expansion joints led to severe deterioration of the expansion piers below, requiring the installation of emergency shoring around three piers while the plans for the rehab project were developed. The Eighth Street bridge and Burns Street ramp bridge replacements were logical additions to the project since the viaduct had to be closed to replace the expansion piers.
