Emory Proton Treatment Center

The Emory Proton Treatment Center, Winship Cancer Institute is a new, three-story, 115,000 square foot proton therapy center¡ªthe first of its kind in the state of Georgia. Built in partnership with Provident Resources Group, the center will further establish Atlanta, Emory University, and Winship Cancer Institute as centers for biomedical innovation and advanced cancer care.

Meeting the owner¡¯s medical program requirements on a constrained urban site with significant topographic variance. Plus, zoning regulations within the district required various amenities and uses to be included. Taking advantage of the slope and length of the site, we designed the proton concrete bunker to fit naturally along Juniper Street. A 20,000 square foot retail space wrapped a 200-car parking structure and helped the proton therapy center blend within the vibrant community and engage with the active pedestrian streetscape.

The facility is equipped with proton therapy technology from Varian Medical Systems, Inc., including pencil beam scanning, a robotic positioning system, and a full suite of advanced imaging technology. The proton system will be capable of providing proton beam treatments to patients in five treatment rooms, treating up to 1,700 patients annually.
