Fairfax County Public Schools ¨C Frost Middle School Addition and Renovation

Originally built in 1963, Frost Middle School needed to increase their capacity and update their facilities. To do this, Fairfax County turned to our team to provide an architectural design solution that would leverage new additions and reprogram/renovate areas to better clarify the school¡¯s wayfinding, enliven the existing courtyards, and connect specific program areas to the outdoors¡ªall the while creating gathering spaces for an enlarged community of learners.

Our design placed additions at the outer edges of the school for easier construction access. Programs like art and dining were relocated and expanded to have a presence in the courtyards, giving teachers the ability to take classes outside. The addition of seating nooks along hallways and under stairs offers students unique and flexible spaces for learning and socializing, enhancing the school¡¯s functionality. Wayfinding and safety were prioritized to support all learners, including deaf and hard of hearing students, students receiving comprehensive services, and students with diverse learning needs. The entry includes an administration addition with a secure vestibule, and a revised main circulation route that flanks the courtyards, establishing the courtyards as the heart of the school and creating a memorable experience for children and adults alike. The school is also designed to Collaborative for High Performing Schools (CHPS) standards, a certification that promotes greener buildings that improve student learning and wellness.

Frost Middle School¡¯s renovation brought a fresh, vibrant, and engaging new look to the existing school, transforming it into a bright and inviting environment for students, their families, and staff.
