George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) WA and WB Taxiway Rehabilitation
George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) undertook a rehabilitation project in 2011 for Taxiways WA and WB. Since then, signs of pavement failure along the main taxiway emerged so a full-depth reconstruction is underway to address incidents of foreign object debris in the failing pavement.
Our senior project manager served as construction manager for Houston Airports during the rehabilitation which included the reconstruction of Taxiways WA and WB, the widening of Taxiway WA, the reconstruction of connector taxiways, installation of a subsurface drainage system, taxiway lighting, updated airfield signage, and installation of elements for the Surface Movement Guidance and Control System. One of our challenges was to construct intersections while minimizing impacts to operations. We coordinated the phases with IAH Operations and the Engineer of Record, communicating early with tenants on operational restrictions. We also adjusted work limits and schedules around tenants¡¯ busy seasons and temporarily modified movement areas to non-movement areas to ease some restrictions.
With WA open, the flow of aircraft on the west side of IAH is greatly improved. The enlarged taxiway supports the largest aircraft currently in use and gives the air traffic control tower more options when using the runway during north flow, taking off to the north.?
