Harvard Stadium Turf Renovation

Harvard Stadium, the world's first massive reinforced concrete structure and the first large permanent arena for American collegiate athletics has typically been used less than 10 times per year since Harvard hosted its first football game there against Dartmouth on November 14, 1903.

With the goal of achieving extended use and introducing women¡¯s sports teams to the stadium, the design team got to work. An innovative, yet strikingly simple idea allows a new unbroken turf surface to stretch seamlessly from wall to wall. A simple removable turf panel allows the Air Structure¡¯s massive concrete grade beam foundation, electrical connection boxes and air ducts to remain hidden from view creating the illusion of a natural turf surface. A new state of the art sports lighting system discretely added to the Stadium¡¯s historic upper fa?ade improves the field lighting while remaining sympathetic to the historic architecture.
