I-83 North York Road Widening
Originally constructed in the late 1950¡¯s, the I-83 corridor (including Interchanges 19, 21, 22) no longer met the needs of the mostly urbanized northern part of York County, Pennsylvania¡ªwhere a variety of transportation modes are present and include vehicular, transit, rail, bicycle, and pedestrian. Aiming to provide a more functional and modern roadway, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) needed to reconstruct this I-83 section to improve future traffic flow and safety on both the interstate and the interchanges.
To assist PennDOT, we provided alternatives analysis, roadway and structural engineering, erosion and sediment control, stormwater management design, and stream relocation for Mill Creek. We also provided public involvement, agency coordination, and utility-railroad coordination for this five-mile corridor of I-83.
Our design helped achieve a project goal of reducing the potential for flooding along the interstate by improving the Mill Creek riparian area and floodway. Our design refined and relocated approximately 4,100 linear feet (1,250 metres) of Mill Creek, which was adjacent to the interstate, mitigating impacts to the stream and its associated floodplain, as well as accomplishing legacy sediment removal within the Mill Creek floodplain.
