Intracoastal Crossing ¨C Hydrodynamic Forcing and Scour Analysis

Florida Power & Light (FPL) is a leading energy provider working to upgrade their service at the intersection of the existing Intracoastal Waterway at the Indian River and Banana Rivers near Cape Canaveral. Given the location of the required towers, they will be consistently affected by tides and vulnerable to storm surge during significant weather events. To ensure the best design and placement of the transmission towers, our team was brought in to conduct hydrodynamic numerical modeling using Delft3D-FLOW and Delft3D-WAVE. ?
?
By utilizing numerical model outputs, our team was able to better understand the hydrodynamic forces and calculate the potential impact of scour on the in-water transmission towers. We simulated storm conditions for 100-year winds and storm surge, enabling high-confidence projections based on data and factors that cannot be measured in real-time scenarios, to provide design recommendations for FPL.

With our work now complete, the process delivered cost savings and improved design considerations for 46 towers.
