Kodiak Police Station and Jail
The Kodiak Police Station and Jail is a perfect reflection of its community ¨C hard-working and colorful. It¡¯s an essential government building that doesn¡¯t look like a boring government building. And it is the first LEED Certified building on Kodiak Island.
The building¡¯s look is inspired by coastal Alaska including gray mortarless masonry that depicts the island¡¯s geology. The earthtones are juxtaposed with bright ¡°safety¡± colors and architectural styles prevalent in Kodiak Harbor, one of the nation¡¯s busiest fishing ports. Through the creative use of translucent walls, ceilings, and clerestory windows, interior spaces that are ordinarily windowless have access to daylight ¨C critical during the dark Alaska winters.
There is complete separation between the major functions of the facility. The jail serves the entire island and includes men¡¯s and women¡¯s detention areas with a capacity of 24. A separate public lobby is used for visitors to the jail, as well as booking areas, sally port, and central jail control/supervisor spaces.
