Long Island Railroad GIS and Asset Management

As part of the larger Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Third Track Expansion Project, the LIRR asset management and geographic information system (GIS) teams needed design sources to be converted into GIS datasets and asset management database tables for consumption by those departments.

Our team supported this task in two deliverable stages¡ªthe first consisting of the initial ready for construction data with limited detail from design sources. Secondly, using an Azure SQL database and a dynamic Â鶹´«Ã½ Database Management Application, detailed attribution of final data (as built) will be populated. Coordination with other design teams proved to be a challenge as there were difficulties locating assets within design files due to varying design standards. However, using feature manipulation engine data translation software, our team was able to complete data conversion through batch conversion scripts rather than individual file conversion.

Through this conversion of design data, we are creating data smart assets that LIRR can leverage for asset management to aid in their long-term data goals. Smart data assets will allow the LIRR to drive efficiency and reduce costs while effectively managing operational risk
