Little Lagoon Restoration
A popular place for boating, fishing, and paddling, Little Lagoon is a semi-enclosed waterbody. Looking to improve water quality and coastal habitats in the lagoon, the City of Gulf Shores contracted us to help implement the Little Lagoon Restoration Project and provide program support, engineering, permitting, and other related services.
This three-year, multi-faceted programmatic approach includes three phased components: Septic to Sewer, Mo¡¯s Landing Living Shoreline, and Hydrological Connectivity. The Septic to Sewer Program provides residents living in the watershed with funding to abandon septic tanks and connect to existing sewer lines. Mo¡¯s Landing Living Shorelines is a demonstration project at the landing that will consist of an offshore breakwater, sand fill, native vegetation, and an observation pier. Third, but not least, the Hydrological Connectivity Program will place culverts under existing city streets at five strategic locations along the canal system on the southeastern side of the lagoon.
When these improvements are complete, residents in Gulf Shores and wildlife in the refuge will enjoy better water quality in Little Lagoon and the canals¡ªall with sustainability and the future in mind.
